Baby & Child UK Passport Photos

Children need their own passport photos at every age. The same 35×45 mm standard applies, but how you photograph babies and toddlers is different from adults.

Rules for children

No other person may appear in the photo. For babies, lay them on a plain cream or light grey sheet and photograph from above.

  • Only the child in the frame
  • Eyes open when possible
  • No dummies, toys, or hands visible
  • Same head-height rules after cropping

Photographing infants

Natural daylight works best. Take many frames to catch eyes open. A parent can sit just outside the frame to calm the baby.

Crop and apply

Use our UK 35×45 template and passport photo checker. Online child applications upload digitally; paper forms need two printed copies.

Common questions

Can a baby passport photo show a slightly closed eye?
GOV.UK allows some flexibility for infants if awake. Try for open eyes when possible.
Does a newborn need their own photo?
Yes. Every passport applicant—including newborns—needs an individual photo.
Can I use a booth for my baby?
Most parents find lying-down home photos easier for newborns than booths.
