Take a UK Passport Photo at Home

You can take your own UK passport photo if it meets GOV.UK rules. Rising search interest shows many applicants prefer phone photos over photo booths—lighting and background matter more than where the picture was taken.

What you need

Use a smartphone rear camera or digital camera. Hang a plain cream or light grey sheet behind you—avoid bright white walls that look like US photos. Ask someone else to shoot or use a tripod.

  • Plain cream or light grey background, evenly lit
  • Natural daylight facing a window
  • Rear camera—not selfie mode
  • No filters, beauty modes, or AI background swaps

Pose and expression

Face the camera with a neutral expression and mouth closed. Eyes open and clearly visible. Glasses are allowed without glare. Shoulders and upper body should appear in frame for digital GOV.UK photos.

  • Neutral expression, mouth closed
  • Look straight at the camera
  • Remove hats unless religious or medical

Crop and check

Upload to our free UK 35×45 cropper, complete the passport photo checker, and download. For online applications, upload to GOV.UK and use their official photo check before paying.

Common questions

Can I take a passport photo on my phone?
Yes. Modern phone cameras are sharp enough. Use the rear lens, even lighting, and crop to 35×45 mm with head guides.
Will GOV.UK accept a home photo?
Yes, if it passes their official photo check and meets size, background, and expression rules.
Can babies be photographed at home?
Yes. Lay infants on a plain sheet and shoot from above. See our UK baby passport photo guide for details.
