Baby & Child Australian Passport Photos

Children need their own passport photos at every age. The same APO size range applies, but how you photograph babies and toddlers differs from adults—search interest for infant photos is rising sharply.

Rules for children

Only the child should appear—no parents, hands, toys, or pacifiers. Use a plain white or light grey background. Head height must still match the APO diagram after cropping.

  • No other person visible—only the child
  • Lay infants on a plain sheet; shoot from above
  • Eyes open when possible; babies may have slightly closed eyes

Practical tips

Photograph after a feed when the baby is calm. Remove hats unless required for religious reasons. A second person can hold a sheet behind the baby without appearing in frame.

  • Use daylight near a window
  • Keep toys and dummies out of shot
  • Take several frames—you need two identical prints

Crop and print

Upload the best frame to our Australia 35×45 mm cropper, run the passport photo checker, and print two identical copies at Officeworks or at home.

Can a baby passport photo show closed eyes?
APO allows slightly closed eyes for infants when eyes cannot stay open—check current guidance on passports.gov.au.

Is the size different for children?
No—the same size range and head-height rules apply to all ages.
